Business and Investor Migrants

Visas fall into two main categories:

  1. Provisional visas are pathway to permanent residency in Australia
  2. Permanent residency visas allow migrants to live and work in Australia

There are a number of visa options for new business and investors:

  1. Business Talent (Permanent) (subclass 132) visa
  • This visa is for experienced business owners, to operate a new or existing business in Australia.

You must have:

  • a net value of at least AUD1.5 million (lawfully acquired)
  • an annual business turnover of at least AUD3 million for at least 2 of the 4 fiscal years immediately before you are invited to apply
  • a total net assets of at least AUD400,000 as the ownership interest in one or more qualifying businesses for least 2 of the 4 fiscal years immediately before you are invited to apply
  1. Venture Capital Entrepreneur stream
  • This visa is for people who have sourced venture capital funding from a member of the Australian Investment Council (AIC) (formerly known as the Australian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association Limited (AVCAL)).
    • You must have funding of at least AUD1 million from an Australian venture capital firm.
  1. Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) (subclass 188) visa

This visa allows you to own and manage a business in Australia, conduct business and investment activity in Australia or undertake an entrepreneurial activity in Australia. The provisional visa has seven categories.

Business Innovation stream

This provisional visa is for people with business skills. It lets you operate a new or existing business in Australia.

Investor stream

This provisional visa requires you to invest at least AUD1.5 million in an Australian State or Territory and maintain business or investment activity in Australia.

Significant Investor stream

This provisional visa is for people who invest at least AUD5 million in Australian investments that meet certain requirements and maintain investment activity in Australia.

Business Innovation Extension stream

This provisional visa lets holders of the Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) visa (subclass 188) in the Business Innovation stream extend their stay in Australia for 2 more years.

Significant Investor Extension stream

This provisional visa lets holders of a Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) visa (subclass 188) Significant Investor stream holders extend their stay in Australia for up to 4 more years.

Premium Investor stream

This provisional visa is for people who are nominated by Austrade and who invest at least AUD15 million in Australian investments and/or philanthropic contributions.

Entrepreneur stream

This provisional visa lets you carry out entrepreneurial activities in Australia.

Business owner visa (Sub Class 890)

This visa is for people who own and manage a business in Australia. It allows you to stay in Australia indefinitely. To apply as a primary applicant, you must have a qualifying visa granted on a particular basis.

Existing business and investor visa holders may be eligible to apply for one of the following visas:

Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) (subclass 888) visa

Business Owner (Residence) (subclass 892) visa/ State or Territory Sponsored Business Owner visa

This visa is for people who own and manage a business in Australia. It allows you to stay in Australia indefinitely. To apply as a primary applicant, you must have a qualifying visa granted on a particular basis.

Investor (Residence) (subclass 893) visa/ State or Territory Sponsored Investor visa

This is a permanent resident visa for subclass State/Territory Sponsored Investor (Provisional) visa (subclass 165) holders and who have held a designated investment of AUD750, 000 for 4 years.
