Extension of streamlined student visa processing - Australia

The Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Scott Morrison and the Minister for Education, Christopher Pyne have announced a package of measures that will simplify student visas through a streamlined assessment-level framework (ALF) and by extending streamlined visa processing arrangements to low-risk non-university degree providers.

The simplification of the Assessment Level (AL) Framework involves the removal of AL4 and AL5 and a reduction in the financial requirements for AL3 applicants from 18 months to 12 months evidence of funds (with the condition that these funds are provided by a close relative of the applicant). These measures will benefit all education providers and are made possible by the existence of the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement which will continue to provide an appropriate integrity safeguard to ensure that only genuine applicants are granted a visa.

The Ministers have also announced that 22 low immigration risk non-university providers who offer Bachelor, Masters and Doctoral degree courses will be invited to participate in the streamlined student visa processing arrangements. These education providers will be invited to participate in the arrangements in the first week of November with implementation likely to be in March 2014.
